The Untold Story

The Portland Downs story begins with the granting of leases in 1865. Portland Downs Station, between Isisford and Ilfracombe in central-western Queensland, was one of the earliest runs (properties) to be settled in the Mitchell District. Conflicts with Aboriginals were infrequent, but they did occur. Daily life for the station community, with some 48 employees at its peak, and the stationís involvement with the wider community.

Personal experiences are highlighted including that of a 14-year-old jackaroo who went on to become an Australian Government Minister. There is even a ghost story entwined in these pages!

This book is a well-documented history of Portland Downs, and, considering my close association and that of my family with the property, I found it most enlightening. The author has researched his subject very well, and the book describes many circumstances of which I had been unaware.

My family has had an association with Portland Downs since my grandfather was an overseer in the early 1900s. My great uncle was a manager, my father an overseer, cousin a manager, and myself jackeroo, sub-overseer and later on manager. Portland Downs was in the forefront of the wool industry and the introduction of new methods in conjunction with a few other large stations that have mostly disappeared. It describes a way of life that has vanished compared to todayís station life.

For those people who are interested in early Australian and Queensland history, I recommend this book as an enjoyable read. It also provides an insight into the rise of the trade union movement, particularly in the shearing and wool cartage industry, together with the day to day problems encountered with drought, wet seasons, blowfly waves and labour.
