Pam Slattery

Flip and Flap are two Little Penguins who leave the safety of their secluded cove and head out into Sydney Harbour. But they don’t realise how dangerous the journey will be
and that the city is not the place for penguins!

What do Flip and Flap encounter out in the harbour? Will they be able to make it back safely to their colony before sunset and avoid all the dangers along the way?

Manly in New South Wales is home to a breeding colony of Little Penguins, but their numbers are dwindling. Foxes, domestic animals, boat strikes and floating garbage all pose a threat to the Little Penguin population.

A portion of the profits from the sale of this book will be donated to the Foundation for National Parks & Wildlife to assist in the ongoing protection and preservation of Manly’s Little Penguin colony. https://fnpw.org.au/

  1. Brooke

Such a cute story book for kids. My daughter loved the adventure flip and flap went on and was excited to see the bridge she has seen before in the beautiful illustrations . Also opened up important conversation about looking after our water ways

“As part of our roles as Grandparents is being the breakfast “entertainment” for the 3 grandchildren that live in the UK. This role is primarily reading picture books as the 3 children – all under 4 – eat their fruit, cereal and toast. What an amazing way to use FaceTime!

We were lucky enough to have this part of the family visit for some of our last summer and so they were familiar with Manly Beach and Sydney Harbour.

A recent addition to our library to share with the children was an autographed copy of Flip & Flap. Not only was this new book with beautiful illustrations to share with the children, but it soon became the first request the minute we came on line.

This story about two young and adventurous Fairy Penguins, ably supported by the accompanying illustrations, has a worthy combination of tale, fact and messages that particularly the eldest grandchild could appreciate. She exclaimed “yuck” on our first reading about the litter in the harbour.

The language suited our grandchildren so that they could understand and appreciate the story as it unfolds, but also utilises vocabulary that would provide both a challenge and an enhanced depth of understanding and appreciation for older readers.

The factual content at the end of the story would support such learning.

We would like to congratulate Pam on the quality of both her writing talent and outstanding artwork. We are very much looking forward to reading and sharing her future work.”

“What a wonderful book about Little Penguins. The story and illustrations are just lovely and the book brings about an awareness of these precious creatures that are now on the endangered list. Thank you Pam for bringing them to life and reminding me of my childhood when they swam and played close to us.”

  4. Gaye Newton

“I read Flip & Flap to my two grandchildren, 7 and 5, and they loved the story and illustrations so much they said ‘that was great, please read it again.’ I am much older, but I also loved it.”

  5. Kate Bennett-Stage 1 Teacher

“This delightful tale of the adventures of two Fairy penguins, Flip & Flap, written and illustrated by award winning artist Pam Slattery has appeal on many levels.

Children readily engage with stories about animals and for children who have any experience of Sydney, the Harbour, and in particular the fairy penguin colony around Manly, this book holds additional interest.

The story describes the adventures of two fairy penguins who decide to explore beyond their sheltered home cove. Adventure takes them into the unknown waters of Sydney Harbour where they encounter danger and uncertainty.

Each of these experiences is graphically illustrated to support the text, so for emergent readers the graphics provide good reading cues and a springboard to scaffold discussion.
The language used is well suited to younger children, however the themes explored in the book push its interest beyond this readership.

Additional notes included at the end of the book provide factual information about these penguins, their habitat and endangered status. This inclusion opens up the scope of the book to be used by teachers in their literacy and shared reading sessions and provides parents and caregivers with a discussion starter.

A delightful tale which can be appreciated not only for the content but for the realistic engaging art work appearing on every page.”
