David Gibson wrote guides and lectures on all matters historical (and occasionally hysterical). David crafted custom-made tours for cruise industry passengers to convention delegates and their partners and had a practical understanding of heritage sites and their attendant infrastructure having worked previously at Newstead House, Brisbane and at the Queensland State Archives.
A onetime advisor to the Queensland Government on the development of the network of Queensland Heritage Trails, David was the ‘go to person’ for those seeking a passionate ‘hands on’ approach to the public presentation of history, heritage sites and exhibitions.
Over the years, a fable has been ‘cultivated’ that Greater Brisbane has no vibrant and enduring cultural landscape. It has been well-recorded that buildings were demolished, the past shunned and the opinions of its citizenry all but ignored. Yes, this did occur – once – however it is manifestly untrue to suggest that nothing survives.
David was a regular contributor to History Queensland magazine. He was not only a great historian with a love for what he did and great wealth of historical knowledge, but also a true “old-fashioned” gentleman.
