Editing

Gail Cartwright knows more about cricket than most people. Her attention to detail fits nicely with being a professional editor and a professional cricket scorer. To have cost effective editing done you need someone who is fast and agile, and has that eye for detail. Her 25 years as an editor demonstrates her ability to receive repeat business from many different sectors of the community including government, corporate and education as well as from publishers and writers.

Of course, Gail has all the formal qualifications.

Bachelor of Arts (English and Ancient Literature) – University of New England – 1995
Master of Editing and Publishing – University of Southern Queensland – 2000
Institute of Professional Editors (Queensland branch) – member since 2000
Accredited Editor (IPEd) – 2018

So you need Gail when you want editing; but what type of editing do you need?

Substantive editing

This is a collaborative process where Gail works closely with you to ensure that the structure, language and content of your manuscript suit the purpose, and your intended audience. A substantive edit generally involves major revision, but it is important to Gail that the manuscript retains your personal voice and style.

Copy editing

This service does not go as deep as a substantive edit. Gail will look at grammar, spelling, internal consistency and matters of style.

Proofreading

Proofreading is an end of process service. A document is proofread when it is ready to go to print or be published online. At this stage, it is a check for typos, and to see whether the final design has thrown up any glitches. All structural, style and consistency editing should have occurred long before this.

Indexing

While most smaller publications can get by with a table of contents or nothing at all, larger publications benefit from an index. This can be as simple as a list of names of people referred to in the text, or as complex as a complete index of people, places, subjects and events.
