Wayne Kelly was born in Mareeba, Queensland in 1952. He graduated as a teacher in 1972 and spent the next seven years teaching and travelling. Wayne received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Queensland in 1980 and joined the Aboriginal Data Archive based at the university. This think tank specialized in research on Aborigines and early Australian history. After leaving the Archive in 1986, Wayne wrote numerous articles for newspapers and the magazine Exploring Australia. With his partner Patricia Hart he established Bright Spark Productions, a research and production unit, with clients ranging from government departments to private individuals. He is a regular speaker on Australian culture and history and has also written Aboriginal Australia and the ABC Radio series The Making of Australia – Trails to Federation and Know Your own Backyard.
