Fact or myth? Harold Bell Lasseter and his claim of finding a vast gold-bearing reef in Central Australia has continually been surrounded in mystery. Yet his ill-fated death in the Australian outback, where the land is unforgiving to the careless and the foolhardy, is relatively undisputed.

Despite Lasseter taking secrets to a lonely desert grave in 1931, the story of the elusive gold reef has become a holy grail for explorers from near and far. One such explorer is Vietnam veteran Bill Decarli, who has spent the best part of forty years unravelling one of Australia’s greatest mysteries.

On his maiden voyage to the outback in 1991, instead of heading towards Western Australia like other diehard explorers, Bill reversed his map and headed east towards Queensland. It was there that he struck upon the infamous gold reef, one that Lasseter had never laid eyes on, yet some how had been made aware of its existence. Based on significant new insights, and with a further nine trips to the reef, the key to putting all the pieces together, for Bill, was a man who barely left any trace of his own existence — until now.

A story of adventurous hearts, honesty and resolve, in this new twist, Bill unearths how Lasseter’s claim was another man’s story, the exact location of the reef and how the reef stands to have a bright future.

Having read Bill’s earlier book “A Dead man’s Dream’ I was looking forward to getting to the end of this quest for Lasseter’s reef. Having served with Bill in training and Vietnam I know him to be a persistent little bugger and was curious to see when he would tie up the unfinished business.
Apart from the personal interludes (which is what often drives one!) the book was a great read. The style was such that it was hard to put down and along with the forensic detective work and patchwork of early Australian history and the mix of characters a really entertaining adventure. The colourful and real life figures of the past and the background of a harsh unforgiving, and at the same time enchanting backdrop of the Australian outback combined with the mystery makes compelling reading.
The intrigues at the end between the `money’ people and the shenanigans of the first ‘money’ men demonstrated that history just repeats itself.
Did he locate it? The detail of the facts would convince any jury to convict!

Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Amazing amount of research, time and effort that has gone in to providing us with specifics shows just how devoted and determined one special individual can be. Would highly recommend reading this book.
Congratulations and thank you Mr Bill Decarli.

This is the second book I have read written by Bill regarding Lasseter’s Reef.
As per his first book, I have found it interesting and yet an easy read, regarding Bill’s history in his explorations
for the proof of the where about of Lasseter’s Reef.
Reading the book was like having a conversation with a friend, and the telling of his personal insights whilst
dealing with the mental stress of proving the existence of the reef and dealing with all and sundry to complete
a life’s question “does the reef exist” and I believe with the extensive information provided, yes it does.

So much more than a single man’s journey towards fulfilling a life mission to uncover the truth about one of Australia’s lasting mysteries, it is the masterful word-crafting that takes the reader into the otherdimensional magic of the Australian Outback. Whether you know about the legendary reef or not, there is something very spiritual in and about this book that transports one to a different space and time, to something deeply rooted in the ancient landscape of Australia. Only a writer with Kristin Lee’s passionate connection to the spirit of the land would have been able to capture that and weave it into a multidimensional reading experience.

  5. Lisa

One Aussie LEGEND uncovered the truth.
An easy to read, highly informative book that could only be achieved by such a dedicated and passionate Aussie.
To be able to continue your investigations and exploration over the past 40 years through thick and thin is truely inspiring.
Congratulations Bill Decarli your are a part of our Australian history.

I didn’t expect to be as riveted to the story when reading this book as I was. In a clear and well-paced style you can feel Bill’s dogged persistence in solving this decades’ old mystery. Interspersed with deeply personal stories and family anecdotes it feels as though the reader is uncovering Lasseter’s tale at the same time as the writer.
