Memoirs need to deliver more than an entertaining description of the view of the various points in a person’s life. A good one describes the motivations and aspirations as well as the character of the subject, while an outstanding one inspires the reader to learn more from their own lives and to develop courage in meeting the challenges that they face. Russell Strong’s narrative of his journey from boyhood in rural NSW to standing on the world stage as a pioneer in liver surgery, gives us all of that. This is a how-to manual in facing down difficulty and doing the right thing for its own sake with humility and a strong sense of humour.

This is the story of a boy who came from a small country town, went on to become a living legend in the field of surgery which had a significant impact in Australia and internationally. The book clearly outlines the controversy and objections to him commencing liver transplants in Australia, mostly by the medical fraternity, but also others. For those of us who had the privilege to be trained by him, he was the “Captain-Coach”, a mentor and a role model. His dedication to his patients was inspirational. History will show the important influence of Russell Strong, exemplified in the text, wherein he “shifted a rock and allowed a path to roll out”. When readers finish this book, they will agree he has certainly left a legacy and indeed made and left a mark.
