Tom McSweeny is a Queensland author who was born and raised in Brisbane. He now resides on a rural property near Stanthope in southern Queensland and apart from writing spends much of his time learning to grow olives, grapes and stone fruit.
“Doc’s War, New Guinea, The Final Campaign”, is his first book which he describes as a labor of love. “The idea for the book came about after my mother passed away in 2008 and a family member gave me my father’s war diaries. As far as I know I was the first person to read them other than my father who had passed away in 1986. He had served as medical officer in the 2/3rd Field Regiment which was attached to the 6th Division AIF. The diaries cover the period from late 1942 to the end of World War Two in September 1945. The idea of getting to know your father as a young man under such dire circumstances was quite compelling. War is such a wasteful and tragic event, but it does highlight some of the finest qualities of our human race. I decided to blend the diaries with the historical events of the time so that many love ones could have some idea of what their forebears endured throughout this terrible time in our young history. There are many notable ANZAC stories; this is one small contribution to that lasting spirit.”
Tom is currently writing another biography of a notable Queensland which should be released in 2018.
