Cobber is a cassowary living in the Wet Tropics region of Northern Australia.
Cobber’s father had told him that cassowaries had a special purpose for being in the rainforest, but he forgot to tell him exactly WHAT it was.
“All I do is eat and poo,” Cobber thinks to himself. “I must find my real purpose for being in the rainforest.”
So Cobber sets out on an adventure to find his true purpose.
Follow Cobber through the rainforest as he asks the many creatures that he meets along the way, but none are able to answer him.
Cobber is enlightened by a wise owl who explains how VERY important Cobber’s purpose is in the rainforest and that the answer had been right behind him all the time!

What a charming text. I love the way the narrative has factual material woven into it.
It would be a great text to teach primary aged children text types and how they can blend together. You could compare and contrast using the factual texts at the back. The pattern in the text and repetition makes it very suitable in an educational setting or in the home. Ofcourse children love the ‘poo’ references. Funny but important.
The beautiful illustrations are soft and delicate. The medium has been used with such technical skill.
I will be recommending this text to my colleagues and friends.

I think Pam Slattery’s book COBBER is delightfully written with wonderful illustrations. I’ve bought copies for my great niece and nephew. Even I enjoyed reading it and looked forward to Cobber’s purpose in life being revealed. A great educational experience. From my experience with pre-schoolers, I think they will love it. The references to poo will make them giggle. I think this book is exceptionally suitable for kindergartens and pre-schools.
